Bruce Knauft

Bruce Knauft, PhD, is Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Anthropology at Emory University in Atlanta. His academic and intellectual focus is the diverse aspects of inter-subjective cultural dynamics in relationship to issues of power and constraint.

Originally a rainforest anthropologist in Papua New Guinea, his initial research on shamanism, sorcery, ritual, sexuality, pariarchy and violence has expanded to work concerning polarization under postwar conflict conditions.

During the past 15 years, Dr. Knauft’s research and personal interests have oriented toward Tibetan Buddhism and the intrasubjective and intersubjective dimensions of cultivating equanimity, especially in regard to afflictive emotions. These interests intersect with his interest in Real Dialogue.
