What Makes Us Human in the Age of AI? (Hint: It’s Not Intelligence)
What does it really mean to be human at a time when artificial intelligence can write, reason, summarize, compose music, and even imitate empathy? That question lies at the heart of both my Substack essay, Carl Jung’s “Basement Tapes” Document His Wisdom About Being Human, and my upcoming live online course, Being Human: Living Wisely, Loving Well, and Leading Confidently. The greatest difference between human beings and artificial intelligence is not intelligence. It is self-awareness.
Artificial intelligence can optimize performance. It can become faster, more accurate, and more successful at accomplishing a task than a human. But it cannot become wiser or more intuitive, it cannot learn from its failures, and cannot reflect on its own limitations. It cannot become aware that it is unaware. It cannot learn compassion through grief, disappointment, love, loss, or mortality. It has no self, no intentions, and no mortality. Human beings do.
We alone can become aware of ourselves while we are thinking, feeling, loving, grieving, fighting, and changing. We can examine our mistakes, question our assumptions, forgive ourselves, and discover that our deepest wisdom often comes not from success but from being wrong, making mistakes, and feeling into our losses.
This week's Substack explores why this distinction matters—not only for understanding artificial intelligence, but for understanding ourselves. It shows why truth, wisdom, and reality cannot be reduced to optimization and why our limitations are not defects to eliminate but the very ground of our humanity, love, and creativity.
These are also the questions we will explore together in Being Human. During six live online sessions, we will dive into the principles of Real Dialogue and discover how greater self-awareness changes the way we live, love, lead, and respond to conflict. Rather than becoming more perfect versions of ourselves, we become more deeply human.
If these ideas resonate with you, I hope you'll explore all three of this week's offerings.
AI Is About Optimizing Success, But Not About Truth or Reality
"There Is No Success Like Failure" — Bob Dylan
Artificial intelligence learns by optimizing success. Human beings learn through something far more mysterious: recognizing our mistakes, reflecting on our failures, and allowing them to transform us.
In this essay I explore why our capacity for self-awareness, imperfection, and mortality makes us fundamentally different from machines—and why those differences may become the most valuable qualities we possess in the age of AI.
Spiritual Healing: A Conversation with Sam Benedeck Sotillos
What is genuine spiritual healing? How is it different from altered states, psychological insight, or simply feeling better? Sam Benedeck Sotillos and I explore the relationship between spiritual awakening, self-awareness, healing, and the distinctly human capacity for transformation.
Being Human
An Operator's Manual for Living Wisely, Loving Well, and Leading Confidently
Six Live Online Sessions with Polly Young-Eisendrath, PhD
Begins Tuesday, September 8, 2026 • 1:00 PM ET
Every day we are encouraged to become more productive, more successful, more efficient, and more attractive.
But becoming wise and confident as a human being requires something quite different.
It asks us to know ourselves authentically, to speak and listen responsibly, to remain curious in the face of disagreement, and to discover wisdom and self-confidence through the inevitable defeats, failures, and losses that every meaningful life contains.
In Being Human, I will teach what I have come to think of as an operator's manual for being human—a practical guide for understanding ourselves, cultivating closer relationships, and learning how to flourish and to lead in a world filled with uncertainty, conflict, rapid technological change, and new kinds of opportunity.
Together we will explore the principles and practices of Real Dialogue and discover how greater self-awareness can help us:
Cultivate greater wisdom and resilience.
Love with more openness, honesty, and compassion.
Lead with confidence, humility, and integrity.
Navigate conflict without dehumanizing ourselves or others.
Learn from mistakes instead of fearing them.
Develop the uniquely human capacities that no artificial intelligence can ever reach.
Whether you are a therapist, coach, educator, leader, spiritual seeker, or simply someone who wants to live with greater wisdom, this course offers practical tools that can change the way you experience yourself and others.
I would be honored to welcome you.
Warmly,
Polly Young-Eisendrath, PhD
